Say hello to Elizabeth! She became part of our Children International family in September 2017. She is 16 years old and lives in Guatemala City, Guatemala. I will be meeting her in person next week. I'm very excited to spend some time with her, although I've been told that I will not be able to see her home because the part of the city she lives in is too dangerous for CI to take me there.
Elizabeth has four older siblings and one younger sister. She lives with her parents on a monthly income of $104. Her home has concrete block walls, a corrugated metal roof and a concrete floor. She sleeps on a wooden bed. She has running water and electricity in her home, as well as a gas stove and a toilet.
School does not come especially easily to Elizabeth, but she understands the importance of a good education and is working hard. She attends public school, and is one of several children whose tuition we are currently funding. She hopes to graduate high school one day with a technical certificate in computing. Her parents support her desire to continue her education, which isn't always a given in our sponsored families - when living conditions are very difficult, it can be hard to see the long-term value of an education versus contributing to the household economy directly at a younger age.
We are still in the early stages of getting to know Elizabeth, and we are looking forward to continuing to build a relationship with her in her remaining two and a half years in the CI program.
